Dow Chemical’s GMO SEEDS present WORSE THREAT than Monsanto’s Roundup
Profit being the sole motive behind Dow’s recent endeavors has released a new breed of GMO seeds. This will put people like farmers and the consumers at a high risk of contracting deadly diseases. Currently, Dow is seeking approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency for its product.
Given that these GMO seeds have already been linked to a chemical agent, which was used to defoliate jungles during the Vietnam War, it has already been named “Agent Orange Corn!”
Strangely, in spite of the health risks and environmental risks genetically modified seeds create, they are rapidly becoming popular.
The new GMO seeds of Dow Chemicals are called “Enlist.” They are resistant to 2, 4-D, an extremely harmful pesticide. They are also resistant to glufosinate and glyphosate, the ingredients in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. The idea is to plant these genetically modified seeds and then spray the harmful pesticides. Dow’s GMO seeds could replace Monsanto’s Roundup-resistant crops. So be prepared for more diseases and more toxic materials in your food.
Dow’s genetically modified seeds will allow farmers to spray indefinite amounts of 2, 4-D, a widely used herbicide. Thus, by killing pests with harmful chemicals, we will get genetically modified foods instead of organic foods grown in a natural way. Companies like Dow and Monsanto promote genetically modified seeds because they increase profits. Can you imagine that Dow expects to make $1.5 billion in 2013 by selling seeds?
A number of people, including farmers, are protesting against these genetically modified seeds because of the hazards they pose to human health and the environment. 2, 4-D has already been found in the groundwater of five states in the U.S. and parts of Canada, and surface water in the U.S. 2, 4-D may increase risk of neurotoxicity and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. 2, 4-D also causes male reproductive problems, cancer, liver toxicity, immunosuppression, endocrine disruption and Parkinson’s disease. Dow’s GMO seeds are also resistant to glyphosate, another toxic pesticide. Glyphosate is supposed to cause infertility, birth defects and DNA damage.
Though the problem related to glyphosate-resistant weeds has been tackled for now, what of the other two herbicides which pose equal threats if not more? To make the weeds form resistance to these again a few chemicals will be added which will lead to the same viscous cycle.
